Millions of people in England can now receive New NHS prescription alerts on their smartphones and smartwatches when their medicines are ready for collection. The NHS App update covers nearly 2,500 pharmacies, including every Boots and ASDA pharmacy, helping patients avoid unnecessary journeys and calls to their local chemists.
The NHS App already allows users to order repeat prescriptions, manage hospital appointments and view GP health records.
The new feature expands the existing prescription-tracking service, allowing users to receive notifications instead of repeatedly checking the app for updates. NHS England expects the change to improve convenience for patients and reduce administrative pressure on pharmacy teams.
How Does the New NHS Prescription Alerts Work?
The NHS App’s prescription-tracking feature provides updates on the progress of prescriptions at participating pharmacies. The notifications alert users when their medicines are ready to collect.
Patients can also view relevant prescription-status updates through the NHS app, including when a pharmacy has dispatched a prescription for delivery, where applicable.
The tracking service, which officials have compared to parcel-delivery tracking, has already attracted significant use. According to NHS England, nearly 2.9 million people have used the new NHS prescription alerts feature, with more than nine million uses recorded since its launch.
Which Pharmacies Offer The New NHS Prescription Alerts?
The new NHS prescription alerts are available at nearly 2,500 pharmacies across England. All Boots and ASDA pharmacies are included in the reported rollout.
The wider prescription-tracking service has expanded further. NHS England’s August 2026 statistics recorded 2,477 pharmacy sites offering tracking and ready-to-collect notifications, while more than 3,200 pharmacies offered the broader tracking service.
These figures describe different levels of service availability. Patients should not assume that every pharmacy offering prescription tracking also supports the new notifications.
The NHS App has more than 39 million registered users, giving the update the potential to reach a substantial number of people who manage prescriptions digitally.
How to Enable NHS App Prescription Notifications?
Patients must opt in to receive the new NHS prescription-ready alerts. To activate them:
- Open the NHS App on a smartphone.
- Enable push notifications in the app’s settings.
- Allow notifications through the phone’s settings if prompted.
- Check the prescription-tracking section for available status updates.
Medicine availability depends on participating pharmacies. Patients who need clarification about a prescription should contact their pharmacy rather than assume that an alert confirms every detail of their medication or collection arrangements.
Can NHS Digital Prescription Services Reduce Pharmacy Workload?
NHS England says the new update on NHS app should reduce unnecessary phone calls and premature visits to pharmacies. Pharmacy teams could then spend less time answering routine status enquiries and more time supporting patients.
Rob Thompson, chief digital, data and technology officer at NHS England, said: “The service would give people more control over managing their healthcare while helping reduce administrative work for staff.”
Health innovation minister James Frith also described the change as a practical example of digital technology improving everyday NHS services and freeing up valuable time for pharmacy staff.
The NHS app prescription notifications rollout forms part of the NHS’s wider digital transformation efforts, which aim to make healthcare services more accessible and efficient.
Why Patients Need Digital and Non-Digital Support?
The Patients Association welcomed the introduction of the new NHS prescription-ready alerts, highlighting their potential to save time and prevent unnecessary pharmacy visits.
However, the success of this approach will depend on consistent implementation, reliable notifications, and clear guidance for patients who need help using digital services.
With these new NHS prescription alerts, the NHS continues to develop its digital services. Therefore, patient feedback and practical outcomes will be important measures of progress.
