  • Clay Hall, the Owner and Medical Director of PracticeRx, combines two decades of clinical experience with entrepreneurship, turning healthcare into a personalized and proactive journey.
  • In 2019, Hall introduced a patient-centered approach that emphasizes home visits, telemedicine, and customized care solutions aimed at treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.
  • PracticeRx focuses on a few key areas of primary preventative care: Psychiatry, Medically Supervised Weight Loss, Men’s Health, Urgent Care, and Wellness Screenings.

“If you find someone who says healthcare is affordable and convenient, you’ve found someone who’s never utilized healthcare in the US,” says Clay Hall, PhD, MBA, NP-C with a smirk, Owner and Medical Director of PracticeRx Concierge Medicine.

As a healthcare provider-turned-entrepreneur, Clay Hall, a nurse practitioner with a doctorate, prefers that his patients have a personable relationship with him and to call him just Clay instead of “doctor.”

He understands the pulse of patient care better than most, having seen it from all different angles over the last two decades.

For him, the future of medicine is not confined to sterile waiting rooms or complicated insurance processes. It’s about meeting people where they are, both literally and figuratively.

In 2019, Hall drew on his two decades of frontline experience and flipped the script, shifting the narrative from reactive care to a proactive, patient-centered model.

His company, PracticeRx offers services such as home visits and telemedicine and exclusive phone lines where patients can call and text their provider directly whenever they need it, aiming to help patients take control of their health and wellness in a way that works for them, not the other way around. Based in Scottsdale, AZ, but serving all Arizonans across the state, this practice is a shining example of personalized and accessible care in an industry often criticized for being inefficient and cookie-cutter.

What drives Hall’s approach? He believes healthcare should be as easy and friendly as texting a friend— but a friend who happens to know a lot about medicine and can get you the care you need. This mindset has not only saved lives, like identifying a hidden heart condition in a firefighter but also empowered patients to take an active role in their health and transformed how they view their care.

GHM: You’ve been in healthcare for almost two decades. Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to create PracticeRx?

Clay: It feels like a lifetime ago, but I began as a paramedic right here in the Valley. Starting my career in a 911 setting was the best thing that could have happened to me professionally. I was baptized in a model where patients reach out and I respond immediately, not days or weeks later.

That philosophy took me all the way to becoming the CEO of a multistate mobile physician practice that was very concierge-like, and now at PracticeRx. I’ve always loved seeing patients where they are, whether that’s in their homes or in a setting that feels safe and personalized. Whenever and wherever you need me, I’m there for you. That’s the world where I feel most comfortable and I’m doing the most good, and I think that resonates with our patients.

Many people including myself as a small business owner, don’t have access to employer-based health insurance, and have had to forego healthcare because navigating the system without insurance is a nightmare. PracticeRx is designed for those who want an easier, more accessible way to care for themselves and their families.

And of course, it’s always insanely expensive to get healthcare in the US whether you have insurance or not. PracticeRx was born from those experiences. I wanted to create something better- Something that puts patients first, keeps things simple, and focuses on their health rather than just reacting to illness. It’s honestly really not that innovative, it’s just focusing on the right things. The things that I think matter to patients.

GHM: You said personalized care for patients. How does PracticeRx personalize healthcare?

Clay: Every patient is different in how they fit taking care of themselves into their life and what they want to get out of their health- we focus on providing options to make it work for them and their lifestyle. Most prefer telemedicine and text messaging, because it’s quick and easy, especially when they’re sick and don’t feel like getting dressed up and getting in the car. It’s really whatever creates that convenient and personal connection, whatever that is for them; that’s what we’re going to do.

At PracticeRx, we focus on primary preventive care in key areas: Psychiatry, Medically Supervised Weight Loss, Urgent Care, Wellness Screenings, and Men’s Health, which includes things like hormone optimization, anti-aging peptides, and sexual health. Why those specialties? It’s what I think people want and need most, and what myself and the providers on our team do best. We’ll continue to add more specialties in the future, but for now, that’s our core focus.

GHM: Beyond the actual care you provide, what makes the PracticeRx experience unique?

Clay: Healthcare is the most people-oriented industry there is, and I love helping patients achieve their goals. At PracticeRx, we try to create an environment where taking care of yourself feels convenient and approachable and is something people want to actually prioritize.

At PracticeRx, we’ve been workshopping the idea of creating a community where people can come together, especially men, for activities like yoga, golf, hiking, pickleball, and simply connecting. We believe there’s real value in fostering a supportive environment where individuals can share positive energy, motivate each other, and build meaningful connections. Like I keep saying, health isn’t just medication or fitness plans, it’s about surrounding yourself with people who uplift and fill your soul with positivity and support you when you need it.

We’re equally excited about expanding to include Women’s Health in 2025. Our goal is to provide women with the same level of personalized care and support, helping them feel and look their best at every stage of life. While Men’s Health has been a key focus, we recognize the unique needs of women and are committed to delivering comprehensive care that empowers them to thrive.

GHM: It sounds like you’ve got a lot in store for the next year. You’ve mentioned a proactive approach to healthcare a few times. What experiences shaped this philosophy, and how does it manifest at PracticeRx?

Clay: Living in Spain and studying global healthcare systems taught me a lot about prevention. In many countries, the focus is on keeping people healthy rather than waiting for them to get sick. Here in the U.S., it often feels like we’ve got it backwards, and that’s never felt right to me.

At PracticeRx, prevention is at the heart of everything we do. One of the programs I’m particularly proud of is our annual wellness screening. It’s incredibly thorough—chest X-rays, abdominal ultrasounds, echocardiograms, 12-lead EKGs, skin cancer checks, and extremely comprehensive bloodwork that checks for over 200 different types of circulating cancer cells, even at Stage 0, which is really early on in the disease. Catching something as early as possible like cancer, can make all the difference.

Also, we offer this screening completely at cost, with no profit margin for PracticeRx, because it aligns with our vision of trying to be one step ahead of illness and disease. It’s our way of showing our patients that actions speak louder than words.

GHM: Can you share an example of how proactive care has made a difference for your patients?

Clay: One case from 2022 really stands out. A firefighter in his early 40s texted me one evening, saying he felt like he should get the wellness screening I just mentioned. He was fit, asymptomatic, and had just competed in an athletic event the week before.

During his echocardiogram, which looks at detailed images of the heart and coronary arteries, we discovered a nearly completely blocked left anterior descending artery—what’s known as the “Widow Maker.” Right then, I called a friend who’s an interventional cardiologist in Scottsdale, and we got him scheduled for STAT surgery the next morning.

Today, he’s back on the fire truck saving lives, and he occasionally texts me to say thank you. Cases like his highlight why proactive care is so important.

GHM: That’s a powerful story. How does this focus on prevention extend to other services you offer, like weight loss?

Clay: Not every case is this dramatic, of course, but the goal is always the same- proactive and not reactive care. So, when someone questions why we provide “vanity” services like weight loss or hormone replacement, for example, I see it differently.

Yes, we’re helping patients look their best, but it’s also about empowering them to feel their best on the inside too and improve their mental health and self-confidence. When you combine that with knowing you’re reducing their risks for heart disease, diabetes, cancers, and other related conditions, it’s just as much a medical priority as anything else.

GHM: Let’s shift gears. You seem very busy with PracticeRx, so how do you manage to have a work-life balance? What are your hobbies/interests?

Clay: Balancing a career and personal life often feels like a second full-time job, and I know many readers can relate to that. For me, it’s about being intentional. I make it a priority to dedicate as much energy to spending quality time with my friends and family as I do to running and growing PracticeRx.

I’m an outdoor enthusiast who loves playing sports and being around people. When I can combine all three, spending time outdoors, staying active, and connecting with others—it’s the perfect recipe for a good life. I’m smiling just thinking about it.

GHM: What advice would you give to readers looking to lead healthier lives?

Clay: Prioritize your health. I’ve seen time and time again that when people take care of their health, everything else—relationships, energy levels, and overall quality of life—falls into place. It’s an investment in yourself that pays dividends in every aspect of your life. Trust me, your future self will thank you.
