The UK Government Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Eli Lilly’s weight loss pill Foundayo. (GOV.UK) With the UK approval for Lilly’s Foundayo, Britain becomes the first country in Europe to authorise an oral GLP-1 medicine for both weight management and type 2 diabetes. UK had previously approved Novo’s Wegovy oral medicine, the first in the European Market.
Unlike injectable GLP-1 medicines, Lilly’s Foundayo is a once-daily tablet that can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions. Despite Eli Lilly’s Foundayo UK approval, the medicine is currently not available through the NHS. Future public funding will be subject to established processes, including an assessment by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Who Can Use Foundayo Weight Loss Pill in UK?
With UK approval for Lilly’s Foundayo pill, the adult public can use the pill for weight loss and weight maintenance alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The authorised population for the Foundayo weight loss pill in UK includes:
- Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above.
- Adults with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related health condition.
- Patients with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes who need improved blood sugar control.
The MHRA said the medicine underwent assessment for safety, quality and effectiveness before authorisation.
Julian Beach, MHRA Executive Director of Healthcare Quality and Access, said “As with all GLP-1 receptor agonists, this is a prescription-only medication, and the MHRA will keep the safety and effectiveness of orforglipron under close review.”
How Does the Eli Lilly Obesity Pill Foundayo Work?
Foundayo belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs mimic glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally released by the body after eating.
The Eli Lilly obesity pill Foundayo acts on areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation. It can help people feel fuller for longer, reduce hunger and decrease food cravings. In people with type 2 diabetes, it also helps lower elevated blood sugar levels.

Eli Lilly’s Foundayo dosing contrasts with the oral Wegovy formulation, which requires patients to take it on an empty stomach with a small amount of water and wait before consuming food, beverages or other medicines.

Is Foundayo Available Through the NHS?
Despite the UK approval for Lilly’s Foundayo, Foundayo is not currently available through the NHS. NICE will need to evaluate the treatment before decisions about NHS use are made.
According to reports, Eli Lilly planned to launch Foundayo in the UK later in August through private prescriptions. The company also said its private UK list price would be lower than Mounjaro’s listed £330 monthly cost, although it had not disclosed the exact price of Foundayo at the time of the report.
Foundayo FDA Approval Adds to Global Expansion
The Foundayo oral medicine had been granted FDA approval in the United States, giving Lilly’s oral GLP-1 treatment another major regulatory market.
The UK approval for Lilly’s Foundayo also intensifies competition between Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Foundayo is the second oral GLP-1 pill cleared in UK after the approval for oral Wegovy in June. Meanwhile, Foundayo remains under review in the European Union.
The next key question will be how quickly private access expands and whether NICE ultimately supports NHS use.
