As the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, she oversees nursing activities and operations across this sprawling 165-acre site, home to approximately 1,400 hospital beds and over 100 operating rooms.

A Career Built on Expertise and Dedication

Shannon Pengel’s journey with Cleveland Clinic began over two decades ago in 1997, when she joined as a staff nurse in the cardiothoracic step-down unit. Her clinical expertise in cardiothoracic surgery, rapid response, transplantation, and interventional cardiology paved the way for her rise to leadership positions. By 2011, Pengel had ascended to director-level roles, demonstrating her capacity for leadership and her unwavering commitment to patient care.

Prior to her current role, Pengel served as the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for the main campus and as Clinical Nursing Director at both the Anesthesiology Institute and the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute. The latter, globally recognized for its excellence in cardiovascular care, boasts 312 cardiac step-down beds, 140 intensive care beds, and state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs. Pengel’s strategic oversight extended to rapid response teams and telemedicine areas, including the Central Monitoring Unit and eHospital.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic tested healthcare systems worldwide. Shannon Pengel stepped up as the Chief Nursing Officer for Cleveland Clinic’s Hope Hospital, a 1,006-bed pandemic surge facility established in less than a month. Under her leadership, clinical workflows, safety procedures, and operational guidelines were swiftly developed, ensuring the facility was prepared to manage the surge in patients.
