Dyson has entered the smart oral-care market. The new electric toothbrush by Dyson that combines a built-in camera, artificial intelligence (AI), sonic brushing and a precision mouthrinse jet.

Launched in Paris on September 1, the Dyson CameraJet toothbrush is designed to combine brushing, interdental cleaning and mouthrinsing in one routine. Dyson’s electric toothbrush can identify gaps between teeth and direct a targeted burst of mouthrinse toward them while users brush. Dyson says the system took six years to develop, with 661 engineers and 30 dental professionals involved.

“We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, how to improve cleaning performance while brushing,” said James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer.

New Electric Toothbrush by Dyson Uses AI to Find Gaps

The central feature of the Dyson toothbrush with camera is its Gap Optical Targeting technology. The system uses a 100,000-pixel macro camera to view the teeth while brushing.

The camera in Dyson’s electronic toothbrush captures 28 live images per second. Machine learning then identifies, tracks, and predicts gaps between teeth. When the system detects a gap, the toothbrush can trigger its precision jet within 100 milliseconds, sending mouthrinse toward the area.

Dyson trained the machine-learning system using more than 470,000 dental images collected during development. The company says the new electric toothbrush runs on 16 million lines of code.

Dyson says images are not recorded or stored on the device or in the cloud.

Dyson CameraJet Toothbrush Adds Precision Flossing

The new device, Dyson CameraJet toothbrush, uses a conical jet rather than the needle-shaped jet found in many conventional water flossers. Dyson says the broader spray provides wider coverage while operating at lower pressure.

To evaluate the design, Dyson worked with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry for more than five years and developed a laboratory “proxy plaque” to test plaque-removal performance. This testing was laboratory-based, so the results should not be interpreted as proof that the new electric toothbrush by Dyson will produce the same outcomes for every user.

The toothbrush also includes a 12.5-milliliter mouthrinse tank. Its anti-gravity design is intended to maintain fluid delivery when the device is tilted or held horizontally, including when users clean the back teeth.

Dyson’s AI Toothbrush Also Uses Sonic Technology

The new Dyson’s AI toothbrush does more than identify interdental gaps. Its dual-bristle head uses firmer inner bristles to help remove surface stains and softer outer bristles for cleaning along the gumline.

Dyson has also developed variable sonic oscillation, which changes the angle of the brush movement to help keep the bristles moving against the teeth.

In external laboratory testing, Dyson reported that the sonic technology system removed up to 69% more plaque than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas. However, the company specified that this comparison came from laboratory testing rather than a broad clinical assessment of everyday use.

MyDyson App Provides Live Visuals & Personalized Feedback

The camera in Dyson’s electric toothbrush also works as an endoscope, providing live visuals to users through the MyDyson app. The new electric toothbrush by Dyson uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect with the MyDyson app.

Dyson says the system is intended to help users identify areas they clean effectively and spots they may repeatedly miss.
