Overview :

Costco and nonprofit SCAN Group announced an expanded strategic alliance to develop senior-focused insurance products over the coming years. The Costco and SCAN partnership is set to bring Costco-branded Medicare coverage to seniors as the warehouse retailer expands further into healthcare.

This agreement marks Costco’s first comprehensive partnership with a Medicare plan. The companies said the planned offerings could include Medicare Advantage, Medicare supplement coverage, pharmacy services, over-the-counter benefits, vision and hearing services, subject to regulatory approval.

The Costco SCAN medicare partnership plans are not yet available. The companies have not announced a launch date or the specific states where the initial products will be offered.

Costco Medicare Plans Could Target Millions of Seniors

Medicare Advantage is a type of private health plan that provides Medicare-covered benefits through an insurer. A Medicare supplement plan, commonly known as Medigap, helps people with Original Medicare pay certain healthcare costs.

Under the Costco and SCAN partnership, the companies plan a limited initial rollout. Costco and SCAN intend to introduce Medicare Advantage plans in two states and a Medicare supplement plan in a third. The three markets together could cover about 5 million Medicare enrollees. However, the companies have not disclosed the states.

The planned Costco Medicare plans could eventually include:

  • A redesigned pharmacy experience

  • Audiology and hearing benefits

These offerings remain subject to regulatory review and approval.

The plans are expected to be available through Costco stores, insurance agents, and online channels, rather than only through warehouse locations.

Costco and SCAN Partnership Expands Senior Healthcare

The Costco healthcare expansion builds on the existing Costco and SCAN partnership and connects Costco’s consumer reach with SCAN’s experience serving older adults.

SCAN Group’s SCAN Health Plan serves nearly 460,000 members across 33 counties in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico and Washington. The organization focuses on healthcare challenges affecting older adults, including chronic illness, access to care and loneliness.

The companies said the Costco and SCAN insurance partnership aims to make healthcare easier to navigate and more integrated into seniors’ everyday lives.

“For the millions of older adults who rely on Medicare Advantage, the future of the program depends on strong partnerships that make healthcare more accessible, more connected and more seamlessly integrated into everyday life,” SCAN CEO Dr. Sachin Jain said in the Press Release.

Costco CEO Ron Vachris said,  “Choosing SCAN was an extension of the company’s effort to provide value while expanding its health services”.

Effects of Costco Medicare Advantage for Seniors

The arrival of Costco medicare advantage plans could give seniors another option when comparing Medicare coverage. However, the Costco name alone will not determine whether a plan is suitable.

Medicare plans can differ significantly in:

  • Doctor and hospital networks

  • Prescription drug coverage

  • Premiums and out-of-pocket costs

  • Covered benefits

  • Rules for accessing specialists

The consumer guidance also stresses that seniors should compare plans carefully and confirm that their doctors and prescriptions are covered before enrolling.

Next Move In the Costco and SCAN Partnership

Regulatory approval for the  Costco SCAN medicare partnership remains the key next step. Costco and SCAN have not announced the exact launch date, states, or final plan details. The initial rollout of Costco Medicare plans is expected to provide an opportunity for the companies to evaluate the products before potentially expanding them.

For now, the Costco and SCAN partnership signals a significant new direction for Costco and adds another potential player to the Medicare market.
