Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company is continuing its acquisition spree with the purchase of Austin-based biotech company 4E Therapeutics. The Eli Lilly 4E Therapeutics acquisition gives Lilly access to 4E’s innovative MNK inhibitor platform and its lead clinical candidate.
These experimental therapies are designed to relieve chronic pain without the addiction risks commonly associated with opioid medications.
While the companies did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction, the deal brings 4E Therapeutics into Lilly’s growing neuroscience portfolio, expanding its market presence in non-opioid pain treatment.

Founded on pioneering neuroscience research, 4E Therapeutics focuses on developing non-addictive therapies for chronic pain, neuropathic pain, migraine, and acute pain. Its research centers on MNK inhibitors, which target the MNK-eIF4E signaling pathway, a cellular process involved in persistent pain signaling.
Chronic pain affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and remains one of the leading causes of disability. Although opioids can relieve pain, their long-term use carries significant risks, including dependence and overdose.
The 4E Therapeutics and Eli Lilly deal addresses the growing demand for effective, non-addictive pain medicines that work through entirely different biological pathways.
Unlike traditional painkillers, these oral medicines developed by 4E Therapeutics are designed to interrupt pain signals at their source instead of masking symptoms and addiction potential.
According to the company’s announcement, its lead drug candidate, 4ET1103, is the first MNK inhibitor developed specifically for pain to reach human clinical trials. The Phase 1 study demonstrated a favorable safety profile, providing an encouraging foundation for future clinical development.

Eli Lilly 4E Therapeutics acquisition further strengthens the non-opioid pain treatment approach. It complements Lilly’s existing neuroscience programs and broadens its opportunities to develop next-generation pain medicines for conditions such as:
