The pharma giant Eli Lilly is continuing its acquisition spree by adding another firm to the list. Eli Lilly has agreed to acquire Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion, giving the pharmaceutical company access to an experimental platform designed to selectively remove disease-causing antibodies.

Eli Lilly’s Merida Biosciences acquisition will strengthen its focus on autoimmune and allergic diseases, with Merida’s lead candidate, MER511, already in Phase 1 development for Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease (TED).

The Lilly and Merida deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has been using the strong performance of its weight-loss medicines to expand into areas beyond obesity and diabetes. The Merida Biosciences acquisition is Lilly’s 13th acquisition in 2026, adding another important asset to its list.

Eli Lilly’s Merida Biosciences Acquisition Strengthens Immunology Strategy

The central attraction of Eli Lilly’s Merida Biosciences acquisition is Merida’s precision immunology platform. Instead of broadly suppressing the immune system, Merida is developing biologic medicines designed to selectively degrade pathogenic autoantibodies—antibodies that mistakenly contribute to disease. Merida’s approach aims to remove the antibodies driving disease while preserving normal immune activity.

“We’re building our pipeline around therapies that meaningfully change the course of disease, not just its downstream effects,” Francisco Ramírez-Valle, Lilly’s senior vice president of immunology research and early clinical development, said in the official announcement.

The strategy broadens Eli Lilly’s immunology pipeline into diseases where targeted antibody removal could potentially address an underlying disease mechanism.

Lilly Gains Merida’s Autoimmune Drug Candidate MER511

The Eli Lilly and Merida Biosciences deal gives Lilly MER511, Merida’s investigational candidate for Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease (TED). MER511 is designed to selectively target the thyroid-stimulating antibodies associated with these conditions.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition in which antibodies stimulate the thyroid to produce excessive thyroid hormone. TED can develop in some people with Graves’ disease and may cause eye inflammation, bulging, double vision, and, in severe cases, vision problems. The Merida announcement estimates that about 3 million people in the U.S. have Graves’ disease, with roughly 25% to 40% developing TED.

Initial Phase 1 data from Merida’s MER511 showed robust reductions in thyroid-stimulating antibodies, alongside what Lilly described as a favorable initial safety profile.

However, MER511 remains an investigational medicine. Early findings do not establish whether the candidate will ultimately demonstrate meaningful clinical benefits or long-term safety in larger trials.

Merida Biosciences Autoimmune Drugs Extend Beyond MER511

Eli Lilly’s Merida Biosciences acquisition also gives the company access to Merida’s broader early-stage pipeline.

One notable program is MER769, Merida’s preclinical candidate being developed for diseases involving IgE, an antibody involved in allergic reactions.

Potential applications of Merida’s autoimmune drug MER769 include:

  • Food allergy

  • Asthma

  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria

  • Other allergic diseases

    Merida also has earlier-stage programs targeting kidney diseases such as membranous nephropathy and other immune-mediated conditions. This broader pipeline could increase the long-term value of Eli Lilly’s Merida Biosciences acquisition if the platform proves effective across multiple antibody-driven diseases.
