Australia has approved Novo Nordisk’s daily weight-loss pill, Wegovy, giving eligible patients an oral alternative to the weekly injections. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved oral Wegovy on November 3, 2026, for four tablet strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg.
The TGA approval for Wegovy Pill marks an important development in Australia’s obesity-treatment market, although patients will have to wait for commercial availability. Novo Nordisk expects to introduce the medicine by the end of the year.
How Does Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy Pill Work?
Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, an active ingredient belonging to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines mimic a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite and food intake.
The Wegovy pill weight loss treatment works by:
- Reducing appetite and hunger.
- Slowing stomach emptying.
- Increasing feelings of fullness.
The oral formulation also uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC, which helps semaglutide pass through the stomach lining. This allows patients to take the medicine as a tablet rather than an injection.
Who Is Eligible For the TGA-Approved Weight Loss Drug?
The indications for the Wegovy tablet are consistent with those of its injectable formulation, leading to the TGA approval for wegovy pill.
Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill is intended for eligible patients with obesity or overweight accompanied by weight-related health conditions. It also has an approved role in reducing major cardiovascular events in eligible adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity.
Patients will need a prescription and an individual assessment from their doctor to start the Wegovy weight loss pill treatment. It should accompany a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
How Is Wegovy Weight Loss Pill Different From Weekly Injections?
Unlike injectable Wegovy, which patients administer once a week, the oral version requires daily use. However, patients must follow specific instructions to ensure the body absorbs enough medicine.
The recommended administration routine for oral Wegovy includes:
- Taking the tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Swallowing it with approximately half a cup of water.
- Waiting at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.
Only a small fraction of the oral dose enters the bloodstream. Missing the recommended waiting period or drinking too much water could reduce medicine absorption. Therefore, the daily Wegovy tablet may not necessarily suit everyone. Some patients may find weekly injections easier to manage.
When Will the Wegovy Pill Launch in Australia?
Despite the TGA approval for Wegovy pill, patients cannot assume immediate access.
Novo Nordisk said it is working to introduce the treatment, with anticipated availability later in 2026. A company spokeswoman stated, “We will share confirmed availability timing as soon as we can.”
The price of the Wegovy weight loss pill in Australia has not yet been announced. The medicine will also require appropriate packaging and production checks before commercial distribution.
The TGA approval for Wegovy Pill could increase competition and expand treatment choices in Australia’s growing obesity-medicine market.
Eli Lilly has a separate TGA application for orforglipron, another oral obesity-treatment candidate. Its potential entry could further increase competition in the Australian weight-loss medication market.
