There is something fascinating about the heart’s ability to inspire both science and poetry. For centuries, it has occupied a unique place in human imagination, but for Dr. Tom C. Nguyen, it became a lifelong calling.

He often reflects on the moment he first witnessed the elegance of a beating heart. While others saw pure anatomy, he saw something extraordinary. That experience shaped the next three decades of his life, setting him on a path to becoming one of the most respected minimally invasive cardiac surgeons in the world.

Today, Dr. Nguyen serves as System Chief Executive of Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care, Professor and Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Barry T. Katzen Endowed Chair at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Across all these roles, his career is anchored by a simple but powerful clinical philosophy: small incisions can create big differences.

A Foundation of Global Curiosity and Elite Training

Long before he became a surgeon, Dr. Nguyen was driven by a desire to understand healthcare far beyond local borders.

After graduating from Rice University, he worked with the World Health Organization in Switzerland, an experience that provided a rare global perspective on public health. He was subsequently awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, a pivotal achievement that ultimately led him to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

For him, medicine was never simply about treating disease. It was about combining rigorous science with human compassion to help people reclaim their lives.

He pursued his surgical training at Stanford University, where his dedication and clinical excellence earned him both the Outstanding ICU Award and the Intern of the Year Award. Following Stanford, he refined his expertise in one of medicine’s most demanding specialties through a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Columbia University.

Recognizing the growing importance of structural heart therapies, he then completed a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Fellowship at Emory University. This rare combination of traditional surgical mastery and advanced transcatheter expertise uniquely positioned him to lead the future of cardiovascular care.

Redefining the Standard Through Minimally Invasive Surgery

Throughout his career, Dr. Nguyen has remained intensely focused on delivering outstanding clinical outcomes while minimizing the physical burden of surgery.

His work in minimally invasive heart surgery has earned international recognition, with data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database placing his clinical outcomes in the top 98.7 percent nationally.

However, metrics tell only part of the story. For patients, minimally invasive approaches often mean smaller incisions, reduced pain, accelerated recoveries, and a faster return to daily life. For him, these human benefits represent the true purpose of medical innovation.

He operates on a simple principle: technology only matters when it tangibly improves the patient experience. That philosophy has guided every stage of his career and continues to shape his approach to cardiovascular care today.

Transformative Leadership Across Premier Institutions

Exceptional surgeons save lives. Exceptional leaders transform entire institutions. Before his current roles in Miami, Dr. Nguyen served as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Charles Schwab Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

During his tenure, he helped transform the cardiothoracic surgery program, establishing benchmark achievements in surgical quality, research, and patient outcomes.

At the same time, his academic influence expanded at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where he served as Associate Professor and later Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He also served as Director of Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery, further strengthening his reputation as a leader in advanced cardiac procedures.

Each institution benefited from the same combination of clinical excellence, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to improvement that has become a hallmark of his leadership. In late 2023, he brought that leadership experience to Baptist Health and FIU, placing him at the intersection of patient care, institutional strategy, and academic leadership.

A Global Voice in Education and Research

The advancement of medicine depends upon those willing to share what they learn. Dr. Nguyen has made significant contributions to cardiovascular science through scholarship, research, and education. He has published nearly 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles, edited several surgical textbooks, and served on the editorial boards of academic journals.

His research focuses on treatments for valve disease, where he has served as principal investigator on landmark clinical trials exploring advanced transcatheter technologies.

These efforts have contributed to the evolution of treatment strategies and expanded the understanding of structural heart disease among physicians worldwide.

Equally important has been his role as an educator and mentor. Through teaching, publishing, and clinical leadership, he continues to influence future generations of surgeons and cardiovascular specialists.

Service Beyond Borders

For Dr. Nguyen, medicine has always extended beyond hospital walls. Over the years, he has volunteered as a surgeon in underserved communities across the globe and spent time living in Africa to share knowledge and experiences with others.

These efforts reflect a belief that expertise carries its greatest value when it is used to serve those who need it most. Whether working in a leading academic medical center or contributing to care in underserved regions, his commitment to improving lives remains constant.

Helping Shape the Future of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The influence of a surgeon can often be measured by the trust placed in them by their peers. Dr. Nguyen has held leadership positions within some of the most respected organizations in cardiothoracic surgery. He recently served as President of the 21st Century Cardiothoracic Surgery Society and currently serves as a Director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

His leadership extends to the boards of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, CTSNet, and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery. These roles place him among the individuals helping guide the future direction of cardiovascular surgery, research, education, and professional standards on a global scale.

The Heart of a Lifelong Mission

Recognition has followed Dr. Nguyen throughout his distinguished career. He has received the Benjy Brooks Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award, as well as teaching honors from both the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the American College of Surgeons. Earlier in his career, he was recognized by the Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award, receiving the honor before the age of 40.

Yet awards tell only part of the story. At its core, Dr. Tom C. Nguyen’s career has been driven by a fascination with the heart and a determination to improve the lives of those who entrust it to his care.

More than 30 years after first becoming captivated by the rhythm of a beating heart, Dr. Nguyen continues to shape the future of cardiovascular medicine through surgical excellence, research, education, and leadership. In a field where innovation is often measured by technology, his career serves as a reminder that the greatest advances are ultimately measured by the lives they improve.
